Many schools have strict no cell phone use policies. They’re in place to prevent people from using their phones in such a way as to disrupt classes. One of the things that can happen when someone has their phone on during class is when the phone rings while a teacher is lecturing or while a student discussion is being conducted, which disrupts the class. It’s also annoying for teachers when one of their students is obviously not paying attention because they’re texting someone. For many of us, though, the ringing of cell phones in the middle of class happens so frequently that we’re to some extent used to it. Even teachers have violated no cell phone use rules during school. But that’s not to minimize the effect of cell phone use during class. Especially with our pretty advanced ring tones, it’s really distracting to have cell phones going off during a lecture. We should be respectful of people who are actually trying to pay attention by keeping our cell phones off at least during class. My school in particular lets us bring our cell phones to school, but we can’t use them while a class is in session. Stricter punishment for using a cell phone while in class could be put in place so that most of us will be discouraged to keep the phones on. But whatever punishments are in place, my point is, just keep them off when you’re in class. – Allyson
