As a student in a very rigorous and at times challenging program, I’m no stranger to increased amounts of stress. Most of the time, it’s the combination of academic stress and stress in life in general that makes things seem overwhelming. People have different ways to deal with stress when it seems overwhelming. Some people find it easy to cope with overwhelming stress, while others haven’t developed healthy ways to deal with it.   What’s troubling for most parents is when we start to deal with stress by “self-medicating” through smoking cigarettes or doing drugs. Addiction is always a possibility when youth begin to self-medicate, but help in dealing with stress is not always available to youth to begin with. The expectation is that we’ll develop coping methods on our own, but when those methods aren’t effective, that leaves us unable to deal with stress.   What are some good ways to deal with stress, especially when it becomes overwhelming?   – Allyson
