The latest Switched-On magazine article is on PTSD, post-traumatic stress disorder, which is an anxiety disorder that can develop after exposure to a traumatic event. Our magazine article mostly focused on its effects on military veterans who came to develop this disorder after the war experiences in Afghanistan and Iraq. The importance of treating this for those involved in the military can be seen in a recent news article about an American army sergeant who ended up killing five fellow soldiers at a counseling center in a military base in Iraq on May 11th. The effects of this disorder can be severe because it causes extreme distress in the individual even after the event has passed. As I noted in a previous entry, mental health is just as important as physical health. There is a need for attention toward disorders such as PTSD. If you or a close one has suffered through a traumatic event and display symptoms similar to PTSD, it would be best to seek guidance or try to help even though it may be difficult to talk about it or know what to do to help.
