I hear people of my generation spouting out often about starving children in third world countries and how they want to help them. If your greatest goal in life is to help the impoverished, then look around your own town, or your city. There are millions of people, even in a nation of supposed wealth as the United States, who struggle day to day trying to eke out a living for their families, for themselves. There’s nothing wrong with wanting to help your fellow humans from other countries, in fact I would encourage it, but to disregard the reality in your own home country isn’t good either.   Helping others doesn’t have to involve volunteering for the Peace Corps or Doctors Without Borders or anything like that (actually that’ll be hard to do if your parents don’t want you traipsing from one area of the globe to another). It can start in your own community. Volunteering at shelters, community centers, etc. Those are all ways to help the world (in a way) without having to leave the country.   – Allyson
