Hurting someone’s feelings, even if you have to, can be just as painful for the person who does it as well as the one whose feelings are hurt. I know from experience. I also know how to make it hurt even more than desired without any intention to do so whatsoever. So, in an attempt to help others preserve friendships, relationships, something in between, whatever they may be, I have a few suggestions. Though it seems as though you should try to undo whatever has happened, probably because the person is mentally writhing, do nothing, especially comfort them, unless you want a repeat of the same emotional storm later down the road. You have to be firm, especially if the hurt feelings were a result of trying to achieve something, such as a more healthy relationship; if you aren’t, everything will revert back to the same sort of thing. And lastly, just know that the relationship will never be the same, no matter how hard you try thanks to the mere memory of the event. In my opinion, the best thing you can do is to drop it and move on. – Eric
