When you do something wasteful often enough, it’s painful to think of all the time spent on doing something unproductive. For some, this means video games. For others, it means sleeping in. For me, it means watching the Chicago Cubs. According to my (rudimentary) calculations, I watch around 80 games, with an average of 2 hours per game, per season. This has been the case for maybe 5 years. So I’ve spent around 800 hours, or 33 days, or over a month, watching a team that currently has 2 times more losses than wins. There is some enjoyment to my fandom, sure, but it’s predominantly a painful hobby. As for why I’m a fan, I’m pretty mystified, beyond the fact that I take after my brother. Regardless of why, I’ve resolved this year that I’ll watch significantly less baseball than usual. Luckily for me, if the Cubs continue to play as they have been, it shouldn’t be too hard to abstain from watching.
