So you’ve run away and want to regain communication with your family, but are a little hesitant. Talking directly on the phone with a parent isn’t always an option. Either you are not comfortable enough yet, are afraid that it will turn into a screaming match, need a third party to deliver the message, or need to make sure your message gets through. Fortunately, the National Runaway Switchboard has the solution to all these problems. NRS has a message service that allows a youth to have us take down a message to deliver via phone to their guardian. The message is relayed to the guardian and they have the option to respond with a message of their own. This service helps open lines of communication between the two parties without any direct contact. The message can vary from anything to “I’m safe” to “I want to come home, but here’s why I ran away.” Communication is key is resolving any problems between individuals, and NRS is there to ensure a safe, confident way to begin that process.
