Communication between parents and teenagers is not always a steady road. Feelings and points of view can be misinterpreted, ignored, and not expressed appropriately. Arguments often result from miscommunications and these misunderstandings can then lead to a youth running from home. Now that the weather is taking a turn for the better, most teenagers find that this is the ideal time to take to the streets. The winter weather is horrible to wander the streets and seek alternative shelter after a big blowout at home; however, now that spring is here, it is open season. The spike in runaways during the warmer months is not surprising, but it is avoidable. Talking helps! Talking things out at home can help avoid an unwanted situation. Communicating with others is not always so easy, but there is help out there. The National Runaway Switchboard provides a service in which a conference call is made between youth and guardian with a NRS trained mediator on the line with you. It’s an opportunity to talk freely and opening about any situation without it escalating to anything bad. It never hurts to try so give us a call.
