In the recently released “Why They Run” report, the National Runaway Switchboard highlighted some really shocking statistics. One that jumped out at me immediately was that 70% of youth interviewed said that when they left home, it was a “spur of the moment” decision. The fact that seven out of every ten runaways (if the data are representative) leave without really thinking over the decision to do so indicates that the likelihood of those seven wanting to return, once they’ve thought about their decision, is high. And when they do want to return, it’s important they have the knowledge and ability to do so safely. This is where the National Runaway Switchboard comes in. When the youth calls NRS, we can help find transportation, food and shelter on their way home, plus we can help them talk to their family, to ease the transition back. It’s tragic to think of a knee-jerk reaction determining your future. With a call to NRS, we can find ways to help make lasting, beneficial, and thought-out choices.
