America is one of the richest, most progressive countries in the world. Shouldn’t it be one of the healthiest too? Maybe it should be, but the sad truth is about 31% of American teenage girls and 28% of boys are overweight. Obesity is a growing problem in America and has been a problem for decades. The pressure put on teenagers by the media to be healthy and slim is one of the main causes for eating disorders in teens. Nationwide 12.3% of high school students had gone without eating for 24 hours or more to lose weight or keep from gaining weight. Teenagers nationwide are hurting their bodies to perfect their appearance. Anorexia and bulimia are two major eating disorders that plague American teens, specifically females. There are many healthy ways to lose weight, but teenagers are always looking for shortcuts. All they know is the pounds drop off fast, and they are ignorant to the effects that not eating or purging has on their bodies. A brighter light needs to be shun upon this situation in order to put a stop to it.
