Volunteering is helping others. But it is also helping yourself. Through helping others, you can make new friends. It makes you want to become a better person, especially when you can see the people whom you help are living more happily. I was not popular at school. I often felt lonely. But since I started volunteering, I have been feeling better about myself. By helping others, I have received a lot of support from my community. It boosts my self-esteem. After volunteering for the past four years, I am now with Public Allies – an Americorps program focusing on developing leadership skills for young people. At Public Allies, I have met many people who are just like me. We all once needed help. We all now want to help others. If you ever feel down, lonely, tired, it might be better to come out to your community and talk to people. You will realize that you can help making a difference in many others’ lives. And by that alone, you’ve made a difference in your life.
