Environmental impact is something everyone can help to stop. When I was homeless I worked on instituting a recycling program at the homeless shelter for youth Urban Peak. I managed to convince the people there that they could benefit from it and they set up a system to recycle. Besides recycling much of our impact is in the form of trash, mainly litter. When we feel down it is easier just to throw something on the ground than to dispose of it properly but if we take the effort out to do so we can make a difference. Most of the concern with litter is that it can stay around for hundreds if not thousands of years. Most plastic is not biodegradable only photodegradable meaning it is only broken down by the sun. We depend on the environment and if we destroy it we destroy ourselves. We have only been making plastics for around a hundred years and if we continue to make them at the rate we are we will soon have much more than we might think. Every one has seen the litter on the streets and in the parks. If this has happened in a hundred years and our population has boomed from 6 billion to almost 7 billion from 1990 to 2010 then imagine how much litter could be created by the time we are forty if we are twenty now. That’s only twenty years difference; just like the twenty years difference from 1990 to 2010.
