Most of us procrastinate, miss deadlines and stray off once in a while. Some do this more often than others. Guilt hits us every time we let ourselves slide from a mistake but most of us just move on, mainly because the consequences we face do not seem to be so terrible. I will still live even if I miss a deadline, you tell yourself. I am in month 8 of my Americorps year and it dawns on me that my own happiness depends on my sense of self-discipline. While doing social work, I realized that how terrible my day was, the very next day I would still be obliged to come to work and do my job. At the end of the month, I would still have bills to pay. If I even let myself to miss one deadline, the other ones would pile up, and I would trail away. Embarrassment, guilt, and insecurities would gradually circle my life. All of us would realize it someday, that we are responsible for our lives and we often do not take that responsibility so seriously.
