We all dream of living a life of success and happiness. But how often can we fulfill that dream? Today society frames success with wealth and reputation, flaunting the images of anorexic models flashing expensive clothes and jewelry. However, the sweat and tears to the day when you can spend thousands dollars in a split second are rarely displayed on the covers of magazines, much less the idea that those who can would never spend that much money without careful thoughts on the longer benefits. So any teenage Vogue reader can daydream of those luxuries and might eventually spend big bucks on them once she earns her first check.

In the daily, mundane world that most of us will end up living though, we will worry more on the monthly rent, insurance, and bills. We will desperately hope for promotion so that we can have that extra bit of saving. What magazines flaunt in front of us will blur into disillusion, and eventually, the main culprit for our daily struggles, desires, self-pity and cynicism.

The bigger challenge is not our magazine editors but rather what our society promotes and the ideals we push ourselves to achieve. How often do we take a second and think about the ubiquitous phrases advertising on every single product like “You are unique!,” “Showcase your personality!,” or “Express yourself!” ? Why many of us have never thought of expressing ourselves in our ideals of success is another mystery.

Success and happiness do not limit themselves to fame and money, nor are they the requisites. Define your own happiness and write your own success story!
