Aiming for uniqueness is about as unique in being a drop of water in the ocean, and for that reason I don’t understand why so many people strive for it. It’s not that they’d like to be individual, to stand outside of the box, that I find so strange, but that it’s the only thing that they value. The mainstream becomes overrated, and so, they find solace in the arms of their fellow stragglers. But that’s where I have the issue: stragglers, plural. Being bored because someone’s not interesting enough, not out there enough, I find it to be off-putting in itself. All those that dare to be different, I say that the rest dare to be different from them. Why throw away something, be it as simple as a music choice or as important as a lifestyle choice just because it’s what everyone else is doing. Value varies from person to person, and that’s where we have our uniqueness. We may all like the same thing, though we may never know exactly why another person does, or even begin to fully understand. And that’s okay, because there’s no trying to be unique. You just are.

  • It’s hard to appreciate uniqueness when we are young. With MTV and other social mediums pressuring us to conform, it makes being your self difficult. This is the reason why I and many other kids run away. Now that I am 23, I embrace my uniqueness.
