Someone’s always saying put your best foot forward, though how do you know which one that is when a shoe, something that someone else made, is covering it? I know it’s just an idiom, but it’s seemed really fitting these past few days. Making an impression on someone is an important step in developing a friendship; making a good impression is a bonus, but I wonder, do we come across as we intend to, or as just ourselves. All the images that flood our daily lives tell us how we should be, how we should act if we’re to be liked, and I can’t help but think that over all the years I’ve absorbed them, changed because of them. I know I’m not the same person that I used to be, but I can’t help but think, each time that I change my demeanor for someone else, of just what part of me I might be leaving behind. A bare foot is never the best foot, but it’s me, it’s you, and it should be accepted, right? I don’t think we live in a world where that’s ever been the case though. Being yourself is hard enough as it is, I’d at least like the opportunity to find out just who that is. Who’s with me? Left shoes off, at least?
