I was talking to a friend from work a few days ago, when he mentioned that this Friday, when he got his paycheck, he’d finally be able to buy some new music. I looked at him a second, confused. It’s rare that I meet someone who actually spends money on their music. Pretty much everyone I know downloads their music for free and I’ve gotten so used to this that actually spending money on a song strikes me as painfully wasteful. My friend isn’t internet illiterate; he’s definitely capable enough to freely acquire his music. His reasoning was that if you don’t support the artists you like, they might not be able to keep producing good music. Whether or not you believe that artists rely on your contributions in order to keep making music probably depends on what you listen to, though. I don’t think Rick Ross needs a dollar from me, but maybe the band from your high school or college could use it.
