Derek Jeter, the beloved Yankee, recently got his 3000th hit with a dramatic homerun. The story was notable for a lot of reasons, but a big storyline was the fact that the guy who caught the ball, Christian Lopez, gave it to the Yankees for some tickets and some signed memorabilia. The thing is, the ball was worth a lot more than that. People speculate that it would’ve gotten something on the order of a quarter million dollars- and possibly even more. Lopez, meanwhile, apparently owes a couple hundred thousand dollars in student loans, so his decision seems a bit silly. His reasoning was that Jeter “deserved” the ball, and while that’s a nice sentiment, I’d argue Lopez deserved the ball more than Jeter deserves the $51 million he’s getting paid to spend three years running around on a baseball field.
