For the past year, Borders stores have been closing around town, one by one. At first, I was pretty disappointed, because they were a convenient and fairly cheap place to buy books. But Borders closing up shop has actually turned out to be valuable for me. Without a giant chain from which to grab some reading material, I’ve been going to really small independent bookstores. One of them, by my house, actually lets dogs in. Plus, their books, a lot of which were used, were cheaper than the ones I got at Borders. The owners of these stores tend to be really friendly, and it’s cool knowing that you’re supporting a person as opposed to a big corporation. I’ve found that even though the selection isn’t as massive, the smaller bookstores will help you find stuff you’d never otherwise pick up. It’s worth it to check out your local independent bookstore, or any independent store in general. It may not be as convenient as going to a chain, but the experience itself will probably be a lot more valuable.
