Sometimes we are ashamed, of ourselves and others, but sometimes others are ashamed of us, and deny us. Sometimes they deny us for who we are. Coming out and telling a family member that you are gay or lesbian can be difficult. This can frighten them, as many people don’t accept what is different or unknown to them. Everyone wants to be accepted and acknowledged, but it doesn’t always work out. It can cause hurt and damage from being denied, especially if we feel that we can’t do anything about it. There is always someone there to help you cope; we just don’t always notice it. Family members can be afraid of the unknown, but once they understand that there is nothing wrong, the family can become stronger and things can get better. There is advice and resources to turn to if there is a misconception of one’s orientation. No one is alone ever. Family is meant to stick together no matter the circumstances, sometimes it may just take a while to get there.
