I have issues with self-confidence. For me it is hard to speak up about myself. I know this is due to abuse and neglect that I went through as a child. When confronted with someone treating me poorly I tend to blow up at them or get out of the situation as soon as possible. I am beginning to work on speaking up against people who are negative towards me. I am not including all situations here because in many situations of violence or abuse it is appropriate to leave so as to avoid further damage. I am speaking of times when people call you names or otherwise verbally abuse you. The best way to deal with someone who is yelling at you or calling you names is to not let them have the power. One way to do this is to not fight back with them but rather rise above the situation and let them know that you won’t associate with them unless they are respectful towards you. If they cannot be respectful towards you walk away. I get people who are rude to me. This is a very familiar situation for me because of my abuse and it is hard for me to let my needs be spoken. I must say though that needs must be met for health to be achieved. My not speaking up for yourself, you are in essence abusing yourself, if it is the appropriate situation to do so in. Thank you.
