I was talking to a friend about using a popular music service the other day, and she told me she doesn’t use it because she can’t stand the brief, intermittent ads. They just bug her too much, she said. To me, this sounded insane. Who would complain about a free service being sponsored by ads? After all, we actually have to pay for cable, newspapers, and clothes which freely and constantly feature advertisements (the little stitched animals on your polo shirt being no exception). If something is free, especially on the internet, it’s not because nobody has to pay for it. It’s because the people who pay for it aren’t you. Next time you whine about watching a 30-second ad before your Rihanna video, consider that someone had to pay to produce the song and video, plus host a website to show it on (or, click the non-official video a couple links below the official one, which usually just shows lyrics but is ad-free). Ads aren’t the most fun things to watch, but they end up making the fun things possible.
