The beach is one of the top destinations on a hot summer day. Have you ever wondered how safe the beach is? Did you know a fun activity, like building a sand castle, could become dangerous? I read an article last week about a 12-year-old boy who was rushed to the hospital after a sand tunnel collapsed on him. The boy was digging the tunnel with his brother when the sand collapsed, burying him. Unfortunately, after being removed and rushed to the hospital, he was pronounced dead.

It is surprising that sand holes collapsing isn’t as rare as a phenomenon as one would like to imagine. According to the New England Journal of Medicine, there have been over 52 fatal and non-fatal cases of sand hole collapses in the past 10 years. Many may be left wondering how to prevent it from happening. Public awareness of this issue helps as well as being cautious of not to dig a hole too deep.
