National School Backpack Awareness Day is an annual event held on the third Wednesday of every September by occupational therapists. The day is intended to bring awareness and education on the proper usage of backpacks to students, parents, and educators. There has been a huge increase in the number of backpack-related injuries among students 9 to 20 years of age. Many of the injuries can be avoided if the backpack is worn correctly or if a book bag on wheels is used as an alternative. The American Occupational Therapy Association has come up with some tips on how to avoid backpack-related problems. Some of the tips include not overloading your backpack; backpacks shouldn’t weigh more than 10% of the carrier’s body weight. Backpacks should also be carried on both shoulders to distribute the weight evenly. Do you carry a backpack?
