National Suicide Prevention Week is a week centered around World Suicide Prevention Day on the 10th of September. The week is dedicated to bringing awareness and attention to suicide that is a world and national health problem. In the United States alone, suicide is the 10th leading cause of death for the entire population and the 3rd leading cause of death for young people ages 15 to 24. Suicide is preventable and research has outlined a list of risk factors. In addition to highlighting the risk factors, research has determined which “factors can be modified to help prevent suicide and which interventions are appropriate for specific groups of people”. So why not spending this week (at least) learning about suicide and how to prevent it! There will be a list of activities taking place nationally this week centered on awareness. The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline has activities planned for each day of the week as well events that may be happening locally near you. Spread the Word, Get Involved!
