If someone asked you to provide your definition of a mental illness, how would you respond? According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), a mental illness is a medical condition that “disrupts a person’s thinking, feeling, mood, ability to relate to others and daily functioning”. Mental illnesses are a lot more common than one would think; unfortunately a lot go undiagnosed or misdiagnosed. Awareness is a critical step in properly treating and serving those with or who have loved ones with mental illnesses. The U.S. government recognizes awareness as a need, so the U.S. Congress established the first full week of October as Mental Illness Awareness Week. It is a week dedicated to raising mental illness awareness across the country. If you are interested in getting involved, check out NAMI’s website for more details.
