National Hunger and Homeless Awareness Week is sponsored each year one week before Thanksgiving. During this week, schools, communities, and cities nationwide take part in bringing awareness to the issues surrounding hunger and homelessness. The National Coalition for the Homeless has a section on their site that provides information on what to do if you are homeless or at risk for becoming homeless.

Around this time of the year, there will become an increasing amount of more winter or cold shelters and soup kitchens opening up for the holidays and winter season. If you are homeless, will become homeless, or know someone in need of assistance, you can give us a call at 1-800-RUNAWAY (1-800-786-2929). Depending on your age and city, we may even be able to call around and try to locate transportation assistance to a nearby shelter. Some major cities (i.e. Chicago, New York) provide transportation to their city shelters by calling 311. So if you know someone who is in need of help, be proactive and give them our telephone number. And if you are in need, someone is waiting by the phones 24/7 to assist.
