Megan told Ron how far she had come since she’d run away a year ago. Back then, she skipped classes because her classmates always wanted to fight her. After Megan changed schools, she focused on her education. She was finally feeling like she had made serious progress in her life. Her goal was to go away to college. If she had a baby now, Megan felt it would ruin all of her plans.

Shadows-rotator

Fifteen year old Megan* called the National Runaway Safeline (NRS) at 10 PM from Red Lodge, Montana. She wanted to run away from home because she might be pregnant. Megan was terrified of how her dad would react. She ran away once before and stayed with a close friend.  When she returned home, things were ten times worse with her dad than before she left. Megan didn’t want to that to happen again.  Although she was feeling overwhelmed, Megan did know that if she was pregnant, she wanted an abortion.

Frontline team member Ron asked Megan what she thought her dad would want her to do if he found out that she was pregnant.

Megan replied, “Get an abortion.”

Runaway Crisis Call Center Volunteers Are Here to Listen

Although Ron and Megan talked about possible scenarios, it was apparent finding out whether or not she was pregnant was the first step.

Additionally, Megan shared that a friend was bringing a pregnancy test to school the next day.  The test would determine if she indeed was pregnant. It was clear Megan had supportive people in her life.  But the fear of her dad’s reaction, led her to call NRS.  Ron and Megan talked about how, depending on the results, she could talk to the school counselor, someone Megan had an established relationship with.  The idea gave Megan comfort.

They also explored what it would be like to talk to her dad. Together, Ron and Megan determined a friend or close family member present during the conversation with her dad would be helpful. In addition, Ron validated everything Megan had already decided for herself, including; when to take the pregnancy test and her best option if she was pregnant.  Megan’s relief was made clear through her tone of voice by the end of the call. When Ron asked Megan how she heard about NRS, Megan shared that she saw 1-800-RUNAWAY on Ludacris’ Runaway Love music video.  Before the call ended, Ron provided a referral to a local Planned Parenthood and invited Megan to call back at any time.
