Crisis Call Center Volunteer of the Month - August 2015 - Jason Chu

Our runaway crisis call center is able to offer services all year round because of our fantastic volunteer staff. They donate their time to speak with youth in need over the phone and online. They are the first contact that callers reach to receive help, get them the resources they need in their area, and who help them develop a plan of action. Each month we like to feature a particular stand-out volunteer for their dedication, attitude and contributions.

Our August 2015 Volunteer of the Month is Jason Chu! A volunteer since January of 2014, we asked Jason about himself and his background.

Fun Fact: I love to travel and am fortunate enough to have a job that’s allowed me to visit six continents!

How did you first become involved with NRS? My coworker, friend, and fellow liner Maria Fraser invited me to Spirit of Youth two years ago. At SOY, I had the opportunity to learn about NRS’ mission and meet a few of the supervisors (Becca and Danny!) and other liners. I had done a lot of one-off volunteer work and wanted to commit to something on a more regular basis so NRS fit perfectly with that!

What keeps you coming back? The popcorn! Just kidding! The feeling that I’ve made a difference. This comes in various ways – a conference call between a parent/legal guardian and a youth that ultimately results in the youth returning home…or something as simple as a caller telling me that they feel better at the end of the call than at the beginning.

What have you found is your strongest skill as a liner? I think my strongest skill is being a good listener and helping callers find solutions in a non-directive way.

Shoutout to fellow NRS volunteers: Thanks to my fellow Monday night crew – both liners and supervisors – I love the camaraderie of NRS! Also, a shout out to Maria Fraser for introducing me to NRS.

Congratulations, Jason! Thank you for all your work and dedication. If you are interested in volunteering in our Chicago call and online center, consider completing our online application today!
