The BGCA annually serves nearly four million young people, through membership and community outreach, in over 4,100 Club facilities throughout the country and BGCA-affiliated Youth Centers on U.S. military installations worldwide.  Their mission is to enable all young people, especially those who need them most, to reach their full potential as productive, caring, responsible citizens.  Their core beliefs are to provide:  a safe place to learn and grow, ongoing relationships with caring adult professionals, life-enhancing programs and character development experiences and hope and opportunity.

The BGCA is one of nearly 10,000 resources in NRS’ database.  For a youth needing mentoring services or searching for a place to make friends, NRS may connect them to his/her local club.  The BGCA also utilizes NRS’ Let’s Talk:  Runaway Prevention Curriculum (RPC) to help youth build life skills.  At many clubs across the country, the RPC provides support for youth struggling with anger management, substance abuse, sexual identity, online safety and ten other topics in the 14 module curriculum.

I had the pleasure of visiting the Boys and Girls Club in Appleton (WI) this previous summer and was instantly impressed with their facilities and staff. The space itself is such a welcoming hang out for youth and they have some amazing programs and activities available. I met with Tim Bohrer, the runaway program director, in regards to our Let’s Talk site implementation project and I’m so glad they were able to come on board. It has been wonderful working with them during this time and I look forward to continuing our collaboration.    – Lindsey Kahney, NRS Prevention Specialist

The BGCA also lends its support as a national partner during National Runaway Prevention Month (NRPM).  During November, BGCA joined NRS and other organizations to raise awareness of the runaway and homeless youth crisis and the issues that these young people face and to educate the public about solutions and the role they can play in ending youth homelessness.
