The National Runaway Safeline (NRS) is proud to announce this month’s Organization of the Month, the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline.

September is Suicide Prevention Month,  so this agency is most appropriate to receive recognition. They are a 24 hour hotline – like ours – for people of all ages who may be having suicidal thoughts or dealing with mental health issues. The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline has been around since January 1, 2005 and began their Veterans Crisis Line in 2007. The Lifeline is a network made up of 164 crisis centers in 49 states.

In 2015, 9% of our callers reached out to us in regards to mental health issues, which includes suicide. When these youth reach out to us and share that they or someone they know is having suicidal ideations or are suicidal, we often refer to youth to the Lifeline. Another great resource provided to youth by the Lifeline is You Matter, which can be found on their website.

You Matter is a safe space for youth to discuss and share stories about mental health and wellness, created and administered by the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline. You Matter blog posts are written by a rotating Blogger Council of individuals between the ages of 13-24 that are passionate about suicide prevention and mental health.

You Matter is a movement to spread the word that your problems, your worries, your fears, and above all you—unique and real you—matter. And because just about everyone—at some point—hits the wall, we’re here to help.

NRS is honored to name National Suicide Prevention Lifeline as our September Organization of the Month. We appreciate the services they provide for youth in crisis.

If you or someone you know is suicidal or having suicidal ideations, feel free to reach out to their hotline for further information: 1-800-273-TALK.
