2009 was the fifth year that NRS had a running team fundraise for the agency. The team included staff and volunteers, as well as newcomers to the NRS family from around the United States. In exchange for fundraising for the agency, runners received paid registration to the Bank of America Chicago Marathon, race training with the Chicagoland Area Race Association, a team shirt, weekly training e-mails, a Marathon Buddy, and an invitation to a pasta dinner the night before the race.

On Sunday, October 11, 2009, the National Runaway Switchboard's (NRS) Running For Runaways team raised over $10,000 at the annual Bank of America Chicago Marathon. This year's team consisted of fifteen runners who ran in support of NRS’s mission to keep America’s runaway and at-risk youth safe and off the streets.

The NRS' Running For Runaways team expanded its team to include the Minneapolis Half-Marathon and 5K, held on Sunday, May 31, 2009. Runners were recruited by NRS Board Member John Roy, and included Roy, Stephanie Little of Wisconsin, James Schwinghammer of Minnesota, and Jessica Van Egeren of Wisconsin. So far, the Minneapolis team has raised over $2,000 for the National Runaway Switchboard

NRS' Running For Runaways team also ran the Half-Marathon in Chicago. Recruitment is underway for the 2010 Running For Runaways Team.
