There is a movie out in theaters that is called Milk. It is a true story based on the life of Harvey Milk. Harvey Milk was an American politician and the first openly gay man to be elected to public office in California, as a member of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors. He was raised in New York where he acknowledged his homosexuality as an adolescent, but chose to pursue sexual relationships with secrecy. Milk had many conservative views about individual freedom and the expression of sexuality. This was during the times where homosexuality was discriminated against. Police would beat anyone who was or even looked gay or lesbian. Harvey wanted people to accept homosexuals for who they were so he led the gay political movement in fierce battles against anti-gay initiatives. Milk was finally elected city supervisor in 1977.  On November 27, 1978, Mayor George Moscone and Milk were assassinated by Dan White. Milk has become an icon in San Francisco and “a martyr for gay rights.”   I thought this was an important issue to bring up because how people treated those who were homosexuals. Just beating homosexuals up for being who they are is sad and just wrong. Cops or people walking down the street would not just beat them up, they would murder them. No one would care and it wasn’t a crime. If it wasn’t for the help of Harvey Milk conditions would probably be the same. Just like if Martin Luther King never helped with Civil Rights of African Americans.   – Tatiana
