December 1st was World AIDS day. It aims to promote awareness about the existence of AIDS and what people can do to help with the issues related to HIV and AIDS. AIDS stands for Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome as it affects the immune system of the infected person in a way that causes it to be weaker against diseases, making them more vulnerable to death from diseases that may be less harmful to others. It is caused/preceded usually by HIV – the Human Immunodeficiency Virus which wears down the person’s immune system when a person is infected with it. Therefore, it is important that we educate the public about HIV and AIDS so that it does not continue to spread considering that there is no cure and there is a potential for death from the diseases the body is exposed to while the immune system is weakened. There are millions of people living with HIV and AIDS today and it is also important that we understand more about HIV and AIDS as there is often a prejudice against the people with HIV or AIDS which helps no one. – Vivian
