I have seen people who were bullied go on to bully people before. I have done it once or twice. When we are young and we are not fully aware of other cultures, other groups of people, it’s easy to pass judgments, to have contempt for others for who they are. It makes us feel better too because now we have someone under us. I have seen people talking against bullying, yet the next second they are on the streets rolling their eyes at the odd smells from ethnic stores or cursing at people’s religious beliefs. Whether you believe in religion or not, religions still play an important role in many others’ lives. By doing those actions, you are claiming your superiority, contradicting your I-am-for-equality mask. At some point in our lives, we all will do one of those actions. But it is important to keep rechecking yourself on your own prejudices.
If you’re bullied and need to talk, you can reach out to the National Runaway Switchboard for support.
