National Runaway Safeline has partnered with The Mirror, Mirror Project out of Venice Beach, CA. This creative initiative pairs professional artists with homeless youth to shift the discourse around homelessness and broaden perceptions using art.
Currently based at a Safe Place for Youth, a drop-in center for runaway teens, Mirror, Mirror creates duel portraits of artists and youth that aim to debunk myths around youth homelessness and engender empathy for a population that is often invisible or easily dismissed. As Tom Miller, artist and teacher puts it, “It is about appreciating our differences, not just tolerating, but appreciating them.”
Mirror, Mirror is about creating stories that cut against misconception and stereotype. It is about accurately reflecting the diverse people who compose a community, humanizing them, and shifting the conversation.
