Summer Safety Tips for Kids – 2016
June is National Safety Month, and here at the National Runaway Safeline, we want to make sure that America’s homeless and at-risk youth are safe and off the street. We also want to keep youth safe during the summer! A break from school is always fun and exciting, whether it is going on vacation with family or just sitting back and relaxing before the new school year begins. However, there are dangers that America’s youth face during the summer. That is why we compiled summer safety tips for kids to keep the summer what it should be: fun and care-free for youth.
Here are summer safety tips for kids can use right away:
- Internet Safety – The online world is rapidly growing. While on summer break, most of us have plenty of time to see what is available to us at the touch of a button.
- We encourage you to speak to an adult before providing your personal information to a person you meet on the internet, such as your telephone number and address.
- If at any point you feel uncomfortable about anything you come across online, do not be afraid to notify an adult you trust about the situation.
- If you decide to meet someone you connected with online, we encourage you to let your parents or guardians know about the meeting, and be accompanied by an adult. We also encourage the meeting to be in a public setting.
- Running Away – During summer break, youth tend to argue more with parents, which can sometimes lead to a youth wanting to leave home.
- If you or a friend are thinking of leaving home for whatever reason, we highly encourage you to reach out to us and talk about options you may have. You can reach us by phone at 1-800-RUNAWAY or online at www.1800runaway.org
- If you are in immediate danger at home, remember you are able to dial 911 to potentially assist the situation.
- If you have already left home and need a place to go, please reach out to us and we will do our best to try to find a safe place for you.
- Health – We want to ensure that youth are healthy while having fun in the sun!
- Avoid the heat. Heat can lead to sunburn, cramps, exhaustion and even strokes. If you live in a home that does not have air conditioning, remember that you are able to hang out at your local library or a shopping mall in the area. Check to see what stores in your area may be 24/7 for especially hot days or nights. If air conditioning is ultimately not available, we encourage you to stay out of the sunshine and occupy the lowest floor of your home.
- Think of others. If you see a child or a pet in a car with the windows up and no air conditioning, it is recommended to call 911 to help the child or pet. An enclosed car can easily reach severely hot temperatures in a matter of minutes.
- Food – Many students across the country rely heavily on school meals.
- Some school districts across the country provide meals, like breakfast or lunch, throughout the summer in order to ensure that students are getting the nutrition they need. Students and parents are able to reach out to their local school district to see if meals are provided in their area.
- People in need are also able to receive food from their local food pantry. If you do not know where that might be, feel free to give us a call at 1-800-RUNAWAY and we will try our best to direct you to a food pantry in your area.
