The National Runaway Safeline (NRS) is proud to announce that this month’s organization of the month is True Colors Fund.

True Colors Fund, co-founded by Cyndi Lauper, is committed to ending lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) youth homelessness. Cyndi writes that she was inspired by the civil rights movement while growing up; seeing not only the minority standing up for themselves but also the majority standing up with them.

She says that we do not have a similar movement for LGBT youth, and:

True Colors focuses on advocacy, training and education and youth collaboration program in order to do this. One of their priorities is the reauthorization of the Runaway and Homeless Youth Act.

This act funds runaway and homeless youth services such as shelter, basic centers, street outreach programs, and the national communication system.

They’ve also utilized their partnerships in Washington D.C. to host the LGBT Rural Summit Series and the LGBTQ Youth Homelessness Prevention Initiative along with forming national and local partnerships to continue building advocacy for LGBT youth.

But, True Colors doesn’t only work with legislators, educators or other adult advocates. They have a full range of programs for youth that help them to envision a full future for themselves. On their website, they also have the True Connect Directory with LGBT-supportive services in each state.

We appreciate everything that True Colors Fund has done and continues to do to make LGBT youth feel safe and heard and are proud to be their national partner.

True Colors Fund is one of the nearly 10,000 resources in the NRS’ database. We are thrilled to have such a strong connection to such a great organization.
