The Advocacy Center Provides Support to Child Abuse Victims | NRS Organization of the Month

The Advocacy Center, is the only provider of Domestic and Sexual Violence services in Tompkins County, NY.

Founded in 1977 as the Task Force for Battered Women, it was created because of the lack of temporary shelter and support for victims of domestic violence and their children. Initially operated by volunteers, victims and his/her children were invited into volunteers’ homes in order to escape from abuse.

In 1982, over concern from the community about the increase in child sexual abuse in the county, the Center established the Child Sexual Abuse Project. This began as a multi-disciplinary sexual abuse investigation team which still operates today. Their work reduces trauma for victims and leads to more successful prosecutions of sex offenders.

It offers extended services to youth who have been exposed to domestic violence, victims of teen dating violence, and LGBT youth who live in the county. The Center also is committed to educating the community on the issues of domestic violence and child sexual abuse.

The organization is comprised of 21 individuals, led by Executive Director, Heather Campbell, MSW, and Louise Miller, Director of Programming. A team of ten advocates/counselors provide support and resources to all impacted by domestic and sexual violence. Each member is certified by the State of New York as rape crisis counselors. A four-person education team provides survivor informed education to adults, youth, and professionals. A two-person administrative staff provides support.

Their website also includes a section labeled, “Get Help for Someone Else.” This provides tips and resources to those who are concerned that someone they know may be a victim of domestic violence.
