August for youth means that school is just around the corner. This is especially important for students that are experiencing homelessness. The beginning of the school year may mean that they can get some temporary relief. Besides benefiting from educational pursuits, the structure of the school day, and often times free breakfast or lunch, may provide much-needed support to a homeless youth.

The National Center for Homeless Education works with schools, service providers and parents to ensure that children and youth experiencing homelessness can enroll and succeed in school.

Based at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, the organization is the U.S. Department of Education’s technical assistance center for the federal Education for Homeless Children and Youth Program (EHYC).

The NCHE provides resources to youth, families and education professionals that address issues like:

  • Educational rights of youth
  • Recommended practices for teachers with at-risk and highly mobile youth
  • Information and insight into the McKinney-Vento Act
  • Overcoming adversity
  • Support for students whose families have lost their home due to foreclosure

One of the best features of the NCHE website is the ability to search for resources on the state level.

Interactive State Map - Resources for Homeless Students - NCHE

A user can see statistics such as the number of homeless students enrolled in state schools, the contact information of the NCHE coordinator for the state, and the overall yearly trends of homelessness among students. Information is available for download.

A comprehensive list of topics can be searched through the site. The alphabetical list contains all issues related to youth experiencing homelessness and seeking education.

The organization operates a toll-free helpline for issues related to the education of a youth experiencing homelessness at 1-800-308-2145. It also offers contact information for the Department of Housing and Urban Development for housing counseling services.

NRS is grateful for the resources that the NCHE provides. It is one of the many options that exist in NRS’ database to help those that connect with NRS. NRS is proud to name National Center for Homeless Education as the August Organization of the Month.
