How can someone be a friend to youth?
National Runaway Prevention Month 2017
It’s that time of year again, summer transitions to fall. The National Runaway Safeline (NRS) is gearing up for a very busy November and National Runaway Prevention Month 2017.
National Runaway Prevention Month (NRPM) is spearheaded each year by the National Runaway Safeline (NRS), the federally designated national communication system for runaway and homeless youth, and National Network for Youth (NN4Y). The goals of NRPM are two-fold:
- To raise awareness of the runaway and homeless youth crisis and the issues that these young people face
- To educate the public about solutions and the role they can play in ending youth homelessness
The theme of NRPM 2017 is “Friends Helping Friends.” A friend is there to support, listen and care. They may be teachers, mentors, peers, or even family members. The National Runaway Safeline is here 24/7 to be a friend and support for youth in crisis. This theme is designed to recognize the role key people play in the lives of at-risk youth.
The NRPM goal is to unite all communities together to help support youth as they navigate their world. How can someone be a friend to youth?
The success of NRPM relies on individuals, communities and the entire country. It’s an opportunity for everyone to come together to show solidarity and support for youth in crisis. To learn more about how to help, please download NRPM 2017 Toolkit.
There are many different ways to make a difference during November and get the word out about runaway prevention. No idea is too big or too small. There are also have several national events happening throughout the month of November.
Important Dates to Remember
Wednesday, November 1st: Facebook Profile Picture. A special NRPM Facebook filter will be shared closer to the date. Individuals, organizations and followers add the filter to participate and show support for NRPM 2017.
Wednesday, November 8th: ‘Wear Green’ Day. Most people have something green in their closet; whether it be a t-shirt, tie, pair of socks, etc. Coordinate a ‘wear green’ day with friends, coworkers, students, and/or classmates on November 8th. This is a fun and easy way to get people to learn more about NRPM. For added impact, take a group photo of everyone wearing green and post it to social media with the hashtag #NRPM2017.
Wednesday, November 15th: National Candlelight Vigil. Youth service agencies, community groups, and individuals will be hosting candlelight vigils to show solidarity with youth in crisis. NRS is encouraging people to pick a place that is unique or special to their city. Maybe it’s a mural, a town sign, or a special building. Broaden the vigil’s reach by filming it live on Facebook or sharing it on any social media platforms with #NRPM2017. Anyone unable to attend a vigil, can participate by sharing a picture of a candle on social media with the hashtag #NRPM2017.
Wednesday, November 22nd: Selfie Sign Day. 1800RUNAWAY.org has a ‘Selfie Sign’ available for individuals and agencies to download. The sign shows how a friend supported NRPM 2017. “This is how I have helped a friend…” caption helps share a story about friendship.
Any social media about National Runaway Prevention Month activities during the month of November should be tagged with #NRPM2017
