At the end of 2017, Chapin Hall at the University of Chicago released its first in a series of Research-to-Impact briefs on understanding and addressing youth homelessness for their Voices of Youth Count initiative.

Below are some highlights from some of these briefs:

4.2 million youth are homeless each year

1 in 30 youth ages 13-17 experience homelessness every year

1 in 10 youth ages 18-25 experience homelessness every year

Of youth ages 13-25 who experienced homelessness: 72% who slept in streets or shelters also couch surfed, 52% felt unsafe, 42% experienced two or more episodes of homelessness and 73% experienced an episode lasting longer than 1 month

Rural and Urban areas have similar rates of youth homelessness

American Indian and Alaska Native youth had 2.2 times the risk of reporting homelessness

46% of homeless youth in large counties are not attending school or employed and 57% of homeless youth in small counties are not attending school or employed.
